Health conversations rarely arrive neatly. They happen while you’re cooking, driving, or trying to leave the house.

Children don’t need one perfect speech. They need steady, honest conversations that grow with them, so health feels like something they can ask about before there’s a problem.

1. Toddlers: Bodies, Comfort, and Simple Choices

Very young children can start with simple links: hands are washed before food, teeth need brushing, sleep helps bodies feel better, and tummies tell us when we’re hungry or full. Name body parts properly too, so children can explain pain.

2. Early Primary: Germs Without Fear

Children aged around five to seven can understand that germs spread through coughs, sneezes, dirty hands and shared cups. They don’t need to fear every surface, but they do need to know why soap matters and why staying home when ill protects others.

3. Primary Years: Food, Energy and Movement

By seven or eight, children can link food to how they feel. Avoid moral language about “good” and “bad” foods. It’s more useful to explain that breakfast helps concentration, water can help headaches, and movement after school may help sleep.

Children who help choose fruit, stir soup or pack a lunchbox often understand food as fuel, comfort and routine. In homes where children are joining new routines, including foster families, everyday health habits can matter even more. Adults learning about ISP Fostering may already be thinking about how meals, sleep and small routines help children feel settled.

4. Tweens: Privacy, Boundaries, and Body Changes

Before puberty arrives, children need calm facts about periods, erections, sweat, spots, body hair and mood changes. Waiting until a child is embarrassed can make the conversation harder.

They should also know that nobody should pressure them into unwanted touch, secrets about bodies or uncomfortable online messages. Clear language about private parts, boundaries and safe adults gives children words they can use.

5. Early Teens: Sleep, Screens, and Stress

Secondary school can bring later nights, group chats, homework pressure, and friendship worries. Instead of only arguing about phones, talk about what sleep does: it helps memory, mood, appetite, and patience.

Ask what makes switching off hard. It might be notifications, gaming, homework or fear of missing out. A teen is more likely to listen when the conversation sounds like problem-solving, not a lecture.

6. Teens: Mental Health as Normal Health

Teenagers need to know that low mood, panic, anger, loneliness, and intrusive thoughts are health subjects, not character flaws. Keep the door open with ordinary check-ins, and let them answer later if they need time. Seeing adults treat feelings, anxiety and asking for help as normal can make it easier to speak up later.

7. Older Teens: Risk, Responsibility, and Getting Help

Older teens need direct conversations about alcohol, vaping, sexual health, online pressure, driving safety and appointments. They also need to know how to book a GP appointment and describe symptoms.

Let them speak for themselves at the dentist, track medication or write questions before an appointment. The best health conversations are repeated, age-appropriate, and honest, and each one should make the next feel easier.

A four-year-old asks why they need to brush “the back teeth nobody sees”, a nine-year-old hates getting changed for PE, and a teenager wants to know whether energy drinks are bad for them.
